The ultimate checklist for a performing Google Business page

The ultimate checklist for a performing Google Business page

May 2025 - Want to be better found locally as a business owner? Then a well-filled Google Business profile (formerly Google My Business) is essential. It is often the first thing customers see of you - even before your website. Yet many SMEs miss opportunities here. This checklist will help you optimise your profile in less than an hour.

1. Claim and verify your business

Haven't claimed your business yet? Go to google.com/business, log in with your Google account and follow the steps. Verification is usually done via a postcard, but sometimes by phone or email.

2. Complete all business details

Make sure your name, address and phone number (NAP details) exactly match those on your website and social media. Also include your opening hours, including exceptions such as holidays.

3. Choose the right category(ies)

Google lets you choose one main category and several additional ones. Be specific: choose ‘Italian restaurant’ rather than ‘restaurant’. It will help you end up in the right search results.

4. Add photos and videos

Images inspire trust and increase click-through rates. Add at least 5 professional photos of your business, products, team or achievements. Videos of less than 30 seconds also score well.

5. Write a convincing description

You have 750 characters to make clear who you are and what you do. Use relevant keywords, but keep sounding natural. Think like a customer: why should they choose you?

6. Collect and manage reviews

Actively ask satisfied customers for a Google review. Always respond - even to negative comments. Show that you are open to feedback and engaged.

7. Use updates and offers

Via ‘Posts’ you can share news, actions or events. Think of a temporary discount, a new service or a seasonal offer. Google shows these updates in your company profile.

8. Check your statistics

In the dashboard, see how many people see your profile, what they click on and how they found you. That way, you know what works and where there are still opportunities.

A well-optimised Google Business profile takes little time, but delivers a lot: more visibility, better first impressions and more customers. Get started today and make your business stand out in the search results.
